[Video] Who is Wang Xinwen 王信文 (Lilith Games) — People in China Games Series #1
The guy, snubbed by Tencent, created the first national hit on mobile, and the gaming industry was forever changed.
Hi team,
Rest assured, the latest issue of the round-up is on its way.
Meanwhile, I’m merging two passions of mine — making videos and telling stories about people in the Chinese gaming industry — for this new series called People in China Games. The stories of these people typically don’t make it into the English news coverage because either they are too niche or news stories usually trim out all the juicy details about these characters’ upbringing, management philosophy, and so on. That said, telling the stories of intensely creative people is what I got into this business for. And I think the video form is perfect in this case as it makes such stories much easier to intuit and digest.
So yeah, the first person I want to highlight is Wang Xinwen. It is time to do so because Lilith Games has finally released Rise of Kingdoms in China last month and it’s been performing tremendously well, which I briefly mentioned in my story about Lilith Games and miHoYo boycotting Huawei’s and Xiaomi’s platform tax.
According to Sensor Tower, the game raked in US$13.5 million during its launch week in China, making it the best first-week performance for a simulation/strategy game in China. But sadly, in that story, I didn’t get to expand too much on Lilith Games and Wang Xinwen. Hopefully, the video does its justice.
Also, although I want to show you all the interesting ads run by Lilith Games, that would make the video too long. And given fair use in copyright and everything else, I figure it’s easier to just share them here.
This Markiplier video has racked up over 1.5 million views on YouTube at the time of publication. (Without knowing how much Markiplier charged, I’m going on a limb and call that a pretty good campaign.)
To wrap up, for the China tech buffs, I’m attaching the links to some of Wang’s speeches and interviews at the end. Feel free to tweet at me anytime should you have any thoughts or questions regarding Wang Xinwen.
Love,
Josh
